Research Process: Step 4: Legal/Ethical

No matter what stage of the research process you're at--only beginning, stuck in the middle, or finishing up with citation polishing--this guide is a great resource for you.

Using Your Resources Legally and Ethically

What is RefWorks?

RefWorks is a bibliographic management tool used by students at Viterbo University. You may create a free account and then save citations from the catalog and most databases; you can also create citations for non-library resources.  RefWorks can be a big time saver when you're researching a complicated project.

You'll need to sign up for an account if you don't already have one. You can go to this page and click "Create Account".  Follow the instructions from there, making sure to use your Viterbo email

What is Turnitin?

Turnitin is a web-based plagiarism detection and originality checking tool that compares a student's writing to a large database of content to identify potential plagiarism.  Viterbo instructors can choose to use the Turnitin service when creating Moodle assignments.

Here is how Turnitin works:

  1. Submission:  Students submit their work to a Moodle Assignment activity that has Turnitin integrated.
  2. Comparison:  Turnitin compares the student's work to its database of student work, websites, books, articles, and more.
  3. Report:  Turnitin generates an Originality Report that highlights any matches and indicates the percentage of the submitted work that matches content in the database.
