Rosh Hashanah is the New Year in Judaism. It begins ten days of penitence culminating in Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish year. In 2024, Rosh Hashana begins on Wednesday, Oct. 2, and ends at sundown on Friday, Oct. 4. Yom Kippur starts Oct 11, 2024 at sundown, and ends at nightfall on Oct 12.
One of Rosh Hashanah's customs is enjoying festive meals. Eating symbolic foods, such as apples dipped in honey, hoping to evoke a sweet new year, is an ancient tradition recorded in the Talmud. On this page you will find library resources featuring Jewish cooking, celebrations, and other cultural customs.
