Flip Finder! Finding Open Course Lessons : Moodle Tips

Resources for finding open source educational resources like videos, MOOCs, and presentations.

Using Open Resources in Moodle

Once you've found content, the next step is putting it into your Moodle course.  There are a few helpful resources below to assist you. If you need additional help, contact coursehelp@viterbo.edu.

Adding Links and Files

Most Open Educational Content can be linked to, but you may need to download and re-upload some files.  We do recommend that you link to content whenever possible.  Below are a handout and steps that help you through adding Files and URLs to Moodle.

Adding a File or URL

  1. Turn editing on in your course and scroll to the course section you would like to add a link in.
  2. Click on the "Add a resource or Activity" link and select "File" or "URL."
  3. Enter a name and description for the item.
  4. For URLs: Copy and paste the selected link into the box labelled External URL.
  5. For Files: Drag-and-drop or browse to the file on your computer.
  6. Save your changes.

Adding Videos

Links to videos can be added to Moodle in one of two ways.  You can just add the appropriate URL from the online site, or you can embed the video in a page.

Adding a URL

  1. Turn editing on in your course and scroll to the course section you would like to add a link in.
  2. Click on the "Add a resource or Activity" link and select "URL."
  3. Enter a name and description for the link/video.
  4. Copy and paste the selected link into the box labelled External URL.
  5. Save your changes.

Embedding a Video

Embedding a Video is a two-step process.  You need to find the "embed" code from the site hosting the video, then add it to a Page resource in Moodle.

Find Embed Code

To find the Embed code, you need to look on the host video site.  YouTube has it under the "Share" option on each page.

Once you see the "Share" options, click on "Embed" to get a box of code.

Add Embed Code to a Moodle Page

  1. Turn editing on in your course and scroll to the course topic you would like to add the video page.
  2. Click on the "Add a resource or Activity" link and select "Page."
  3. Enter a name and description for the page and video.
  4. In the content section, click on the "HTML" button in the third tool bar (next to the spell check)
  5. Copy and paste the embed code into the box.
  6. Save your changes.

The video should now appear on your page.
