Introduction to Moodle

This guide provides resources and instructions on how to use Moodle, Viterbo's learning management system.  All instructors teaching at Viterbo must do the following with Moodle:

  • Post a syllabus and make the course available to students one week before class starts.
  • Post course information, contact information, and office hours in a Moodle block.
  • Have an active gradebook reflecting all graded activities, updated regularly through the term.

Introduction to Moodle Video Series

The following video series is a recorded Introduction to Moodle session. This session provides an overview of how Moodle works, how to communicate with students, add files and other content, assignments, discussions, and use the grading features.

The series is an hour long in its entirety, however feel free to view sections individually as needed.

Activities A general name for a group of features in a Moodle course. Usually an activity is something that a student will do that interacts with other students and or the teacher.
Advanced Forum An enhanced forum that allows teachers and students to sort and search discussions, and track unread posts.
Announcements Use the announcements block to keep your students up to date on class news. Only instructors are permitted to post in the Announcements forum.
Assignments Part of the "Activities" group, assignments enable teachers to grade and give comments on uploaded files and assignments created on and off line.
Attendance Part  of the "Activities" group, attendance allows instructors to track and grade attendance.
Book Part of the "Resources" group, the book module is a useful resource to create and display multiple pages of content, in a book-like format.
Chat Part of the "Activities" group, chat allows course participants to have real-time synchronous discussion. Chat functions as a chat room, not a private chat.
Choice Part of the "Activities" group, the choice module inserts a multiple choice question into the Moodle course page.
Checklist An advanced grading method, checklist provides teachers with a simple way to assign points to a set of criteria for grading an activity in Moodle.
Database Allows the teacher and/or students to build, display, and search a bank of record entries about a topic.
Discussion Forum Part of the "Activities" group, the forum module is an activity where students and teachers can exchange ideas by posting comments.
External Tool Part of the "Activities" group, the external tool enables Moodle users to interact with LTI-compliant learning resources and activities on other websites. For instance, an external tool could provide access to a new activity type or learning materials from a publisher.
Feedback Part of the "Activities" group, the feedback module allows you to create an conduct surveys to collect feedback.
File Part of the "Resources" group, the file module allows you to upload files for student reference.
Folder Part of the "Resources" group, the folder module allows a teacher to display several course resoruces together.
Forum Part of the "Activities" group, the forum module is an activity where students and teachers can exchange ideas by posting comments.
Glossary Part of the "Activities" group, the gloassary module allows participants to create and maintain a list of definitions, like a dictionary.
Gradebook All the grades for each student in a course can be found in the course gradebook, or "Grader report."
Grades All the grades for each student in a course can be found in the "Grades" part of the "Administration" block.
IMS content package IMS is a body which helps define technical standards for various things, including e-learning material. The IMS Content Package specification makes it possible to store chunks of material in a standard format which can be re-used in different systems, without having to convert the material to new formats.
Label A label serves as a spacer on a Moodle course page. It can be used to add text, images, multimedia or code in beteen other resources in the different sections.
Lesson Part of the "Activities" group, the lesson module presents a series of HTML pages to the student who is usually asked to make some sort of choice underneath the content area. The choice will send them to a specific page in the lesson or be used to review the material covered (and graded).
Marking Guide An advanced grading method where a teacher enters a comment per criterion and a mark up to a maximum. Similar to a rubric, but with less criteria/points earned.
Meta (META)

A META course allows us to combine multiple sections into one Moodle course and Moodle and Vitnet take care of the enrollments. You enter all of the content into the new META course so you don’t have to duplicate it for classes that are identical. It can be for two (or more) sections of the same course or cross-listed courses.

Page Part of the "Resources" group, a page creates a link to a screen that displays the content created by the teacher. The page can display many different kinds of content, such as plain text, images, audio, embedded code or a combination of all these.
Questionnaire Part of the "Activities" group, a questionnaire is a survey-like type of activity. It allows teachers to create a wide range of questions to get student feedback.
Quiz Part of the "Activities" group, the quiz module allows the teacher to design and build quizzes consisting of a large variety of Question types, including multiple choice, true-false, and short answer questions.
Resource An item that a teacher can use to support learning, including a book module, file module, folder module, IMS content package module, label module, page module and URL module.
Rubric An advanced grading form used for criteria-based assessment. The rubric consists of a set of criteria. For each criterion, several descriptive levels are provided. A numerical grade is assigned to each of these levels.
SCORM package Part of the "Activities" group, the SCORM module allows teachers to upload any SCORM or AICC package to include in your course.
Survey Part of the "Activities" group, the survey module provides a number of verified survey instruments, including COLLES (Constructivist On-Line Learning Environment Survey) and ATTLS (Attitudes to Thinking and Learning Survey), which have been found useful in assessing and stimulating learning in online environments.
Turnitin The Turnitin Moodle plugin allows teachers to check their students' work for plagiarism.
URL Part of the "Resources" group, the URL module allows teachers to link out to web content.
Wiki Part of the "Activities" group, the wiki module is a collection of collaboratively authored web documents. Basically, a wiki page is a web page everyone in your class can create together, right in the browser, without needing to know HTML.
Workshop Part of the "Activities" group, the workshop module is a peer assessment activity with many options. Students submit their work via an online text tool and attachments. There are two grades for a student: their own work and their peer assessments of other students' work.
